Cookie Dough Seems to Be the Problem
Blue Bell Creameries LP issued a statement yesterday recalling three different ice cream products amid concerns over Listeria monocytegenes contamination. The company, which shut down its operations completely last year because of Listeria, states that this move is voluntary and out of “an abundance of caution.”
The products affected by the current recall all contain no-egg chocolate chip cookie dough as an ingredient. The cookie dough, provided by third party supplies Aspen Hills, Inc., has yet to cause any illnesses. And, in fact, Blue Bell said in a statement that their enhanced food testing practices identified the issue.
Still, there is concern over the following Blue Bell ice cream products:
Product Name | Size | Code Date(s) |
Chocolate Chip Cooke Dough | Half gallon | 082618226 |
Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough | Pint | 081518242
082418242 |
Cookie Two Step | Half gallon | 080418222
081818224 |
**Please note that code dates appear at the bottom of each carton.
Listeria Concerns
Listeria monocytogenes is an organism found in food which causes serious, sometimes deadly, infections in at-risk populations. Those at the greatest risk include the very old, young, and immune compromised. Furthermore, Listeria can cause miscarriage and still birth among pregnant women. Signs and symptoms of Listeria-related infection include headaches, high fever, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, and stomach cramps.
At this time Blue Bell advises anyone with the above-mentioned ice cream products not to consume them. They can return them to the place of purchase for a full refund or call 979-836-7977 between Monday and Friday from 8am-5pm CST.
