Always Tender BBQ Ribs Recipe

A few months back, we posted a recipe for Baked Barbecue Ribs, which is great when you need a rib-fix in the winter since you are baking them in the oven.  Today I have a different recipe to share on how to make pork ribs, whether they be baby back, spare ribs or country.  There are many ways to make ribs but I have found that with this recipe, the ribs are always tender.  Another plus, they are made in the crock pot!  You can eat them when they are done from the crock pot or put them on your grill or under the broiler for a little “color”.

The first step with this recipe is to prepare the ribs for a spice rub.  I’ve read recently that you should remove the membrane from the back of the ribs, to allow the rub to penetrate the meat.  That is something I had never done before.  Its easy to do once you get it started.  It usually comes off in one piece.

Once the membrane is removed, cut up the ribs so they fit into your crock pot.  I usually cut the rack into about 2 or 3 pieces (you can cut them up more when you are ready to serve them).  Next you will use the spice rub.  Do not pierce the meat with a fork, literally rub in those spices!  Then wrap up the ribs and refrigerate for at least 4 hours.

When you are ready to cook the ribs, they go right into the crock pot!  Very simple. You can use your own spice rub or use the one I have below.  The rub adds a lot of flavor to the ribs.  When they are done cooking in the crock pot you can baste them with your favorite BBQ sauce, eat them like that or put them on the grill or under the broiler.  They are already cooked and done, so you just want to give them a little bit of that grilled flavor and color.

Ingredients:

  • 3  lbs. pork ribs (approximately)
  • 2 tablespoons smoked paprika
  • 2 teaspoons dry mustard
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • barbecue sauce for basting and serving

Directions:

1. Mix smoked paprika, dry mustard, black pepper and salt in small bowl.  Set aside.

2.  Remove membrane from back of ribs.  Cut ribs to fit in crock pot.  Rub spices on ribs.  Once completely covered with the spice rub, wrap ribs in plastic wrap.  Refrigerate for at least 4 hours.

3. When ready to cook, remove plastic wrap and place ribs in crock pot.  Cook on high for 4 – 5 hours or low for 6 – 8 hours, until fork tender.

4.  Remove ribs from crock pot and place on grill for 5 – 10 mins.  Or under broiler for 5 mins, flipping halfway through.  Baste with barbecue sauce if desired.

5.  Cut up ribs for serving.  Serve with barbecue sauce.

Enjoy!!
