Yesterday, Publix Supermarkets, Inc., based out of Lakeland, FL, made an exciting announcement regarding its plans for expansion. The chain, which currently operates in 6 southeastern states, has purchased lots to build two new stores in the state of Virginia, the first in that market.

The announcement of Publix’s move into Virginia is, as its CEO explains, part of a comprehensive strategy of expansion which focuses on “new opportunities which supports our culture of promotion from within.”

The two Virginia stores will be located in Bristol (Washington County) at the northeastern corner of Clear Creek Rd. and Lee Highway, and the Richmond area (Glen Allen, Henrico County) at the northeast corner of Twin Hickory Rd. and Nuckols Rd. The Bristol store is set to open in the last quarter of 2017, followed by the Glen Allen store in early 2018.

Virginia is the latest state to benefit from Publix’s push north into new markets. It’s last expansion was into North Carolina in 2012. Currently, the company operates over 1,100 stores in the states of Florida, Georgia, North and South Carolina, Tennessee, and Alabama. It employs over 179,000 people in those stores, its corporate headquarters in Lakeland, its eight distribution centers, and 10 manufacturing facilities.
