Blue Buffalo Recall

On Friday, the FDA announced that the pet food manufacturer, Blue Buffalo has issued a voluntary, limited recall of its Blue Kitty Yums Chicken cat treats due to the possible presence of propylene glycol in the treats. Though it is commonly used as a food additive for dogs, and classified as “generally recognized as safe” for that purpose, propylene glycol is banned by the FDA for use in cat food and treats due to its link to Heinz body anemia.

A cat who has been exposed to high levels of propylene glycol will exhibit a number of symptoms including,

  • Depression/lethargy
  • Loss of muscle coordination
  • Muscle twitching
  • Excessive urination
  • Excessive thirst

Any cat who has eaten the affected treats (listed below) and who displays these symptoms should see a vet immediately.

Recall Details

Incredibly limited in scope, this recall came as a result of a complaint from a customer, which then led the FDA to test of the treats. Although low levels of propylene glycol were present in those cat treats, no other complaint or problems have been reported.

Still, as a precaution, Blue Buffalo is recalling the entire lot treats which include 2 oz. packages of Blue Kitty Yums Tasty Chicken Recipe packages with these details:

  • UPC: 859610007820 – Best If Used By: April 24, 2016.
  • UPC: 859610007820 – Best If Used By: July 24, 2016.

These treats were distributed nationwide via specialty pet stores and though online purchases. No other Blue or Blue Buffalo treats or flavors of treats for dogs or cats are included in this recall.

Customers with an affected package should not feed the treats to their cat. Instead, they may return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. In addition, they can contact Blue Buffalo with any further questions or concerns. They can be reached via phone at 888-667-1508 from Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm EST or via email at [email protected]
