A&P Stores Becoming Stop & Shop

The recent announcement by A&P that it will close all of its stores by Thanksgiving in accordance with its bankruptcy filing this summer has surely concerned many loyal shoppers who are unsure of where to get their weekly groceries. However, for patrons of 25 former A&P stores located throughout the New York Metropolitan area, that won’t be a problem at all. Stop & Shop Supermarket Company, LLC began converting them from A&P to Stop & Shop stores last week and expects all locations to open to the public by Friday, November 13th, in time for the holiday rush.

What Shoppers Can Expect

All 25 locations currently under conversion fall under the New York Metro division of Stop & Shop and include locations in Brooklyn at 625 Atlantic Ave. and The Bronx at 961 East 174th Street, as well as locations throughout Long Island and Queens. Pharmacies and banks within each store will continue to operate throughout renovations and conversion process.

The conversion process will not only modernize the former A&P stores which, as a result of bankruptcy, had failed to upgrade aesthetics as well as systems such as lighting and refrigeration, but will also introduce a number of exciting products to former A&P shoppers. At the head of this is Stop & Shop’s Nature’s Promise line of natural and organic foods which includes more than 1,400 specialized products. Buyers will also be invited to sign up for the Stop & Shop Card and begin earning rewards including exclusive discounts and Gas Extra Rewards, which they can use to get up to $2.40 off per gallon at participating Shell gas stations. The Peapod internet-based home shopping service, which operates in all five New York boroughs and throughout Long Island, will also be available to local Stop & Shop customers.

Giving Back to the Community

As a company committed to working with and for the communities it serves, Stop & Shop Supermarket Company also plans to make a donation to a local non-profit that serves children in each of  its new communities. It will also hire more than 3,000 former A&P sales associates to work at the new Stop & Shop stores.
