Deep-Dish Apple Crumb Pie
I’ve been searching for a deep-dish apple crumb pie for a while. I had something very particular in mind. I didn’t have much luck finding one, I hunted here and there and came up with my own variation. The apple part of the recipe was my mother’s apple pie recipe. I’m not a huge fan of pie crust, but I like crumb topping and this being a deep-dish pie, you don’t need a bottom crust. You have a lot of apples and crumbs.. just what I was looking (drooling) for! 😉
This recipe may be similar to an apple crisp, but it has a lot more apples and to me the crumbs are different than what I put on a crisp. Everything goes into a 2 qt. casserole, put it in the oven to bake and you won’t be disappointed.
Anyway, if you have gone apple picking, love apples or want to try a super delicious pie make this recipe. I literally could not stop eating it. 😀

Deep-Dish Apple Crumb Pie

Filling:
- 4 – 4 1/2 lbs. apples, peeled, cored, cut into eights (baking apples work best such as Rome or Granny Smith)

- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- 1 1/2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 1/8 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon grated lemon rind
- 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
- 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 stick butter melted – divided (2 tablespoons for filling)
Crumb Topping:
- 3/4 cup brown sugar, packed
- 6 tablespoons butter, melted (remainder of the stick)
- 2/3 cup flour
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 425. Combine sugars, cornstarch, salt, rind, lemon juice, nutmeg and cinnamon in bowl. In a 2 qt casserole add prepared apples and mix with the sugar/lemon/spice mixture. Pour 2 tablespoons of melted butter over apples.
2. Prepare the crumb topping by blending brown sugar, butter, flour and cinnamon together. Sprinkle crumbs on top of apples.
3. Cover pie with foil and bake for 15 mins. Remove foil and continue baking for 30 – 40 mins until apples are tender and crumbs are browned.
Enjoy!!
